A man in Scotland could be saddled with thousands of dollars in bills caused by a motorcycle crash that he had nothing to do with. The tragic incident occurred when Paul Duffy sold his bike, and the new owner was in a fatal accident on it a few days later. However, the rider didn't have any insurance on the cycle, and Duffy hadn't yet canceled his own policy.


Because Duffy still had insurance on the bike, his insurer claims that he could be liable for the damage. By selling the bike, the company thinks that Duffy granted the new owner "permission" to ride it, according to the Daily Record. The business could take Duffy to court to recoup the money that it paid out.

Duffy told the paper that he believed that selling the motorcycle also ended his responsibility for it. "I am effectively having to pay for an uninsured driver having a fatal accident," he said to the Daily Record.

To make the whole situation even sadder, Duffy is reportedly recovering from leukemia and takes care of his disabled wife. He's now warning other riders to make sure to cancel their policies as soon as they sell their cycles.
